So for example, if I add a new friend, will other friends on my list see in their newsfeed that I am "now friends with _____" or does hiding your friendslist also hide new friend adds from showing up in other's newsfeeds?

even if you hide your friendslist, when you add some one, it'll show as 'Me is friends with xyz' in your friends newsfeed.
