windows xp updates after 4/8/14?
after 4/8/14 windows will quit sending updates and patches for windows xp based computers. if i have free version of avast antivirus is my system still protected from malware viruses etc. or do i need to go to google chrome with avast to stay protected? is bing also an alternative? or do i need to upgrade to newer version of windows?

Newer version of windows is by far the safest option. Because XP is not going to be supported, this means that as exploits for it are not going to be fixed anymore, placing your identity (this could include your bank details) at risk. Antivirus software simply scans for viruses and deletes when if finds, it does not protect against exploitable loopholes in your software.

summary: upgrade windows.

Well the updates for XP is gone, but the updates for your programs like flash, reader, shockware and etc is not dead. But you should go for Windows 7 if you want support and fixes. Suggest install Vista with SP2 built in as an upgrade path to 7, then install 7 on top of that, if you do care about saving your personals files like documents, videos, and pictures. That personal stuff is saved in a folder called Windows.old.

But much more cleaner experience is to backup your data to external HDD or DVD. Then run Windows 7 installation from outside Windows XP and grab the drivers for 7 from the manufacturer. Drivers for vista also work in 7, some drivers for XP also work in 7. Update Windows using Windows update, make sure Microsoft Security Essentials is not selected if you plan to install your favorite antivirus. Install your free avast antivirus program. Then install your desired programs like MS office and your good to go.

It'll be protected from viruses that Avast knows about but there's nothing protecting your OS from flaws that will never be patched.

You will still be ok. All applications for XP will still update, based on the application vendor. Most AV products will continue to update their files for some time yet.

- Windows XP (and the Windows XP mode on Windows 7) service pack 3 end of mainstream support on April 14, 2009 and end of extended support on April 8, 2014.
- Windows Vista service pack 2 end of mainstream support on April 10, 2012 and end of extended support on April 11, 2017.
- Windows 7 service pack 1 end of mainstream support on January 13, 2015 and end of extended support on January 14, 2020.
- Windows 8 (8.1) end of mainstream support on January 9, 2018 and end of extended support on January 10, 2023.
= Mainstream supports such things as paid support, security update support, non-security hotfix support, no-charge incident support, warranty claims, design changes and feature requests, product-specific information that is available by using the online microsoft knowledge base, product-specific information that is available by using the support site at micosfot help and support service to find answers to technical questions.
= Extended supports has everything mainstream supports but without non-security hotfix support, no-charge incident support, warranty claims.

- You can configure the windows services using, computer's start menu -> run -> services.msc.
- DANGER BEWARE! Disabling the services will break many functions. Unless you know what your doing, disabling services is a good way to protect your security and get rid of wasteful system resources.
- Ask another question so I can paste information if you need help tweaking the services, most of them you probably don't need/use anyways OR read this guide http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libra...10%29.aspx
- Also, software and already hardware (you will have to look it up) will start ending their support for Windows XP. So you lose security there too.

- Note: You probably also want to replace your windows firewall with another firewall.
- Note: You probably also want a anti-virus program such as the free Avast or such as paid Kaspersky or Bitdefender or Mcafee. Some of these also provide firewalls.
- Note: You probably also want a anti-malware program as a back up such as free or paid Malwarebytes.

= Yes you can still use Windows XP, but it will not be totally safe even with taking security measures.
= Either cut out the internet on Windows XP or upgrade to Windows 7.
