I just heard Facebook ($FB) might switch from NASDAQ to NYSE. What's the difference? Why does this matter?

The only thing I know about these markets is that NASDAQ is more of a fast paced exchange, and NYSE is in new york. seriously i dont know why it matters.

NASDAQ is a virtual exchange. This means that people who own Facebook shares can sell their stocks online from anywhere in world by means of an internet connection or through a broker. The limitation comes
NYSE has a virtual component, but maintains a trading floor. Now the person who owns Facebook shares can sell their stock through the virtual component of the exchange or through a broker on the trading floor. The market-makers in the NASDAQ are usually HFT programs while market-makers in the NYSE are typically firms. Although, the NYSE is becoming increasingly virtualized beginning with the merger with Euronext. Shifting to the NYSE would allow Facebook access to larger investors and more international investors. |
