I sit next to a girl in biology and since we usually have to work in groups I usually talk to her. She always smiles when talking to me but avoids making eye contact, even if she is looking at me she will quickly turn away, if I look back at her. She is also always fidgeting with her hair, fixing it and messing around with her phone the entire class she isn't texting on it either just going on random sites . I always have to initiate the conversation or she won't talk the entire class. Although for a few classes now she does make short eye contact and I have tried talking to her after class but she acted really strange and afterwards walked away really quickly. I really like talking to her since we have a lot in common but things usually get awkward between us because she doesn't talk much unless I ask her things about herself. She always asks me for help even though she is smarter than me and she always sits next to me even if the other seats are empty, but I haven't seen any signs of her liking me except her fixing her hair and fidgeting with her phone

Hard to tell man. She could be one of two things.

#1: She likes you but is really shy to converse with you.
#2: She isn't into you in a romantic way.

Why don't you add her on Facebook or something... And start talking to her that way. Just start with a simple 'hi or hey' and see where that goes. She's probably shy/nervous and so talking over message is much less stress. Or ask for her number, if she asks why, say 'incase I need your help with the homework or something'..then text her and start the conversation that way. I've been on a couple of dates with this guy I like, yet I've hardly made I contact, I feel horrible about it..but I don't because if I do my brain just freezes and I can't keep the conversation going..it happens every time. She could be the same. That's really the only advice I can give based on you question.. But I hope this works out for you..
