Since Yahoo search gets it's data from and is owned by Bing, you really hold be looking at Bing optimization, some say Bing gibes content and domain links more influence, while Google is bigger on backlinks.

The smart people at SEOmoz usually have insightful comments.

There isn't really much you can do for one search engine that wouldn't help results for the other as well. Just do everything you can and don't worry about whether it's better for bing/yahoo or google. If there is anything that might set them apart it's the local listings. Each SE uses a different source to display local results, basically. So make sure you're business/site is listed in google and listed in yahoo/bing as well.

Several years ago, it used to be super-easy to rank a site on Yahoo (but nobody really wanted to), since all one needed was keywords, a few internal links, and that was basically it. Yahoo does not care for backlinks that much compared to Google.

Right now, I'd say things changed a bit - it has become harder. Besides, Yahoo's search results are now powered by Bing, and Bing has been trying to become better at analyzing backlinks and perhaps social signals.

I would just focus on building a great, popular site, with keywords in all the right places, because, if you manage to rank on Google, you'll most likely rank on Bing/Yahoo as well. Unless you disarm your SEO for fear of Google penalty, then maybe not.
