a student wrote on a twitter account that they knew of a teacher who had had sex with a student. The thing is the student, heard this from someone so it could or could not be true. What kind of trouble is the student in? Is he in trouble at all. This happened in high school by the way.

Sometimes...Where there's smoke, there's fire. But right now, it's only hearsay. If there is real, provable evidence, then - and only then - should it be brought to the attention of the authorities.

It is stupidity that could result in an innocent teacher losing his/her career, family, etc. Unfortunately posting a rumor is not a crime even if it is not true. posting something you know is false is libel, but posting something and not knowing but believing to be true is not. Which does not make it right.
