SEO means search engine optimization, and falls under onsite and offsite SEO.

Onsite SEO refers to things like making sure your site structure is clean, logical, and easy to use, free from unnecessary code, etc. It also means that your files and pages are labeled properly, and that you have content that is readable intended for users, but still have your topic's keywords.

Offsite SEO refers to keyword research, link building, anchor text, social media, directory submission, article submission, comments on blogs, profiles, and forums.

The thing is, if your site isn't optimized, much of your offsite SEO efforts will be wasted, because you have to know what you're selling. Think of the Google like a dating site that connects two parties (the internet user, and your website).

On a dating site, you fill out your profile with your likes and dislikes and what you're looking in the other person. The dating site then shows other people's dating profiles that match what you put in your profile. So, in order for Google to match your website with users, you need to put in your "dating profile" (i.e. website content) what you think your ideal site visitors would be looking for.

Social media is great because you can integrate your networks and instantly update them all the same time each time you add a new post to your website.

Also, get creative and figure out what current issues related to your topic you could post about in your site, and comment on (and tie into your site) on other blogs, forums, etc.

You can also create website banners and ask other sites if you can post them there. A web banner is eye-catching and basically an advertisement for your site and will take the user to your site when he/she clicks on it.

Also look into pinterest if your site has a lot of photos, because that's a great way to promote your site and get traffic.
