Nope. There is no reason why using it as a hotspot would damage it.

Nope.
if your using software like Virtual Router , basically what you are doing is using software to create a virtual system of Router.
its like hardware Vs Software
if software goes down , No problem!
but if Hardware goes down, ..... Sad
