there have been many scams like this before, but this one seems to be real. best case would be posting a picture with the hashtag "savemyig2014" this May or may not secure your account. but better to safe than sorry.

While I have no legitimate proof that this is fake or real, I do know a couple of things:

First of all, the only way I have seen people being "warned" of this deletion is through other people's posts. If this were really happening, Instagram would have an official notice within the actual app, or in the news feed that told you so.

Secondly, here is the most common message I have been seeing going around:
"Many people are seeing, "Sorry, we can't provide News at this time" when they refresh there News Feed. This is because The Instagram Council is deleting many accounts due to money loss. REPOST THIS AND HASHTAG #SaveMyIG2014... to let the Instagram council you are active."

There are a couple of things wrong with that notice:
1. The Instagram Council sounds completely fake. No company I know of has a "council," more of something along the lines of "Board of Directors"
2. They use the wrong "there" when they say "when they refresh there News Feed." It should be "when they refresh their news feed." No company as large as Instagram would make such a careless mistake as that in an "official notice."
3. If Instagram truly is deleting accounts, why would the News Feed not working have anything to do with it? Sounds like someone is just trying to use server downtime to take advantage of people.
4. If Instagram were deleting spam accounts, they would probably have a better way to detect that than to have everyone repost a picture with a hashtag. They would use a spam detection algorithm, and they wouldn't just delete the accounts immediately, they would probably send an official warning.
5. I'm not sure how many people know this, but Instagram is owned by Facebook, the largest social network around. Facebook is insanely popular, and so is Instagram. There is absolutely no reason for Instagram to be losing money.
6. They would not delete accounts just to save money. Sure, it would free up server space, but deleting accounts will only make the userbase smaller, therefore decreasing their revenue. It would only make them lose even more money. Instagram thrives on a huge userbase. Their goal is to get more users, not less.
7. I have seen at least three different posts floating around, each of them different. If this were actually happening, Instagram would have a standardized notice. Some say they are only deleting spam accounts, while others say they are only deleting inactive accounts. Either way, they wouldn't figure out if an account is inactive or spam by having people repost a hashtag.

I am not reposting the hashtag, and I am almost certain it is fake. There is just too much to be suspicious about.
