Say the year is 2008 and you are a business that is inventing a new service that will allow users to transfer pictures from their phones to their pc and on other social media sites without the need for a usb connection cable or the need to be on the computer to do so, would you consider the usb connection cable your competitor?

I would say so, at least in part, because competition is anything that overlaps what you are doing.

The usb is a sub competitor in this scenario not a direct competitor, the PC bluetooth device you would class as a competitor

A cable is not a competitor - it is an alternative technology, just as bluetooth or a printer/scanner might be an alternative technology. Competitors are people who are trying to win the customers who you want - they may offer different technologies, different pricing, different routes to market.

NO because in 2008, nobody knew about USB cables as they were not invented then. So you can't imagine something like that.
