Starting facebook conversations with girls?

I am really shy and I want to develop some friendships with girls over facebook. I dont have a problem talking to girls, just the first little bit ("breaking the ice"). I dont know what to say to girls to start a conversation. I am afraid if I just jump into a conversation without anything really to talk about they will ask me what I wanted to talk to them about and I will just have nothing to say. Can somebody help me? I'm looking for male and female imput aswell. I guess this applies to both facebook and real life I just was thinking about facebook when I started writing this.

Honing your chatting skills on facebook will not help you in real life. Typing is not the same as talking to a female face to face.

You need a female friend. Someone you go to school with, live close to, or find a friend of one of your buddies girlfriends. They are usually the best. You are not encroaching on your friend's relationship, and you have someone who is easily there. Plus, if you meet in a group, the ice is already broken. Have your buddy introduce you.

WELL! First of all you shouldn't just make the friendships on Fb talk to them in real life too! I know I like it when guys are man enough to talk to me in person too. Not just hide behind Fb. To start a convo on Fb just be like HEY! What's up!? She'll respond nothing hbuuu!? (possibly) just say something interesting to start a convo and then say people said you were really cool and I wanted to get to know you better! And just talk about random stuff!

the borrring hey, hey, watsup, nm u?, same. convo is boring maybe find an interest or comment on how they look or if their funny, i guess some ppl like it if u right out tell them 'yr hot' that just makes me uncomfortable. strike up a conversation before u start telling them that their pretty or watever, u can talk about anything be yrself but dnt be too boring good luck

It all depends on what your trying to gain a friend or a "girlfriend"
for a friend there's nothing special you have to say just talk to them normally who know maybe that will make friends like you.

For a girlfriend you would tell her how good she looks, and just compliment her alot. don't drop the bomb by telling her you like that sometimes backfires.

you dont even have to know what to talk about they will usually start the conversation if you just go with it.

first off, you gotta be hot, if your not, dnt bother. this is how some of my guy friends went about talink to me, before they knew me.

Boy: Hey

Me: Do i know you?

Boy: No, but i wanna get to know you tho

On facebook, you can start the conversation by commenting on the her page. There should be something there that caught your attention or interested you. Compliment her on her taste of hobbies or tell her you like the same type of music also. This will allow her to know that you are interested in talking to her as an individual. Don't be upset if she doesn't respond immediately, after all we can't always predict how others will respond to us. But when she does, you can talk to her more about your shared interests and introduce yourself to her. The same thing applies to real like situations. See a girl on line at the coffee shop that you're interested in? Mention how freaking long of a time you've been waiting for. If she's interested she will agree with you and you guys can take if off from there. Bottom line is always look for something in common to talk about or something that she can relate to. Also be aware in situations like these if it is more appropriate to talk. A girl who's reading at barnes and nobles for example might not want to be bothered but on line at a coffee shop, you can bet that if the wait was long, she will obviously sympathize and chat it up with you.
