I just recently got my site to page one on Google, Bing & Yahoo using SEO (search engine optimization) Your keyword selection is extremely important.
Search engine optimization is a rather long and complicated subject, but it is by far the best way to get free traffic to your site. Here are some great articles on the subject that I recommend to all of my students. You of course don't have to do everything at once, take it a step at a time. It takes a while to climb the rankings, so don't be in a hurry.

I think a previous answerer meant Google Adwords and not Google Adsense. Open a Google account if you don't have one and then go the the Adwords section.

Google Adsense is to place other people's Google Adwords on your own website which you don't want. You want to place your Ads on Google's search engine so its Google Adwords.

Bing now runs Yahoo's search engine so go to Bing.com and checked out their requirements
