What type of law in the UK covers social media e.g writing abusive things on facebook?
E.g if someone was writing abusive things and was prosecuted for it, what law would they have breached
specifically what law?

The same lwas that exist for non-internet crimes.

So threatening behaviour, stalking, libel apply.

People report it to the police all the time, some have been jailed for inciting hatred - ISP'S will trace your details and give the information to the authorities..
