Why do people make fake profiles online?

I met this girl online and talked to her for like 2 weeks her pictures looked real, she messaged me all the time but I started getting suspicious when she wouldn't call, skype or snapchat so I did a little research and searched her picture and she turned out to be fake.

I wasnt heart broken or anything but felt very violated. I just cant understand why anyone would do that.do they like being someone else or are they just weirdos? I see it all the time on facebook and dating sites and I just dont understand why they do it. what do you think?

To find out what someone really thinks of them?
To con money out of someone?
To see if the person their interested in is cheating or talking to others?
They are lonely and can't get attention any other way?
Their underaged and shouldn't even be on a site?
They simply like drama?

Some people create their fake id because of enjoyment. They make their IDs fake for chatting a stranger one for take enjoyment and get their personal information.

Many reasons
1 - some are gay and can't come out so they create profiles of the opposite sex to be able to flirt with people of their gender without having to come out
2 - some are really ugly or overweight and feel that people won't like them for their looks so they create fake profiles of good looking people
3 - some are cruel and just get off playing with other people's emotions
4 - some are bored and married or in a relationship and think this is safer than physically cheating on their partner
5 - some are psycho exes who use fake profiles as a way of keeping tabs on their ex

People create fake accounts all the time for a number of reasons. They want to scam people for money, they are pedophiles who want to lure kids, bordom, revenge, to make political cases, etc.
In your case, it was most likely a creepy pervert
