Are people deleting me on fb?

so this is kinda a lame question but me and my friend are in a competition on who can get the most facebook friends. Most of my friends on fb, I actually know and talk to but some I just added cause their in my class at school. I'm up to 700 friends but it seems like occasionally it'll drop down to 698 or 699. So I keep thinking people deleted me, but then a few days later it'll be at the same number again, then it'll drop on and off.
Are people really deleting me? please no rude comments

if your numbers are dropping, then yeah.
and if they raise it could be new friends that have accepted your friend requests.
but your email fb alerts will tell you the truth.
