SEM is search engine marketing that usually used by internet marketer to promote their product but SEO is search engine optimization that used by webmaster or blogger to make their web or blog shown on the first page on search engine result page (SERP)

There is a lot of confusion these days regarding SEO, SEM, SEA and various acronyms dealing with websites and such. I actually wrote a mini article explaining the differences between each of these acronyms. Hopefully it can help you out for other question you have on the other ones.

SEM is Search Engine Marketing
SEO is Search Engine Optimization

SEM is promoting you products or services on the internet, and includes search engine campaigns like Google AdWords / AdSense, etc.

SEO on the other hand is promoting your website or blog to the search engines. SEO consists of various things that you do onsite and offsite in order to rank higher in the search engine result pages (SERPs) when someone searches for the keywords relevant to your website.

Please note that these days, many people use these terms interchangeably.

Yeah, all the above answers are correct. But a good SEO expert includes SEM somehow in his work.

A SEO tries to get his customer's pages ranking as high as possible (with the provided budget). But it makes of course no sense to rank #1 for a search term nobody searches for.

On the other hand, a SEM expert is looking for lucrative traffic through the search engines too, but his work is in first place focused on the business aspect and as a need, secondly on the search engine rankings. There is much more than just good ranking in search engine marketing.
