My computer says low memory but I have half my ram available?

I've been getting low memory errors for a couple of weeks, usually when I'm playing The Sims or using chrome. I checked my RAM and apparently I still have half available. Why is this happening? Could I lose my files like it says? I'm using Windows 8.

If it is during game play, your system might mean your graphics memory is running low.

If this is from a laptop, there really isn't much that can be done. If it is on a desktop, you can upgrade your graphics card.

If that is out of the question, lower your game settings to let your system have some breathing room. I wouldn't know how to fix that with Google chrome.
