Search engine optimization & google ?
I'm being told that on google, when one does any search, the list of links appearing on the RIGHT side of the page are the sites that are paying PAY PER CLICK and the list on the LEFT SIDE, are the ones that are NOT paying pay per click...is this true? if so, how do the list on the LEFT side manage to be on the first page or top or whatever...is it through effective SEO that they are somehow managing this?

1) yes, the results on right (and sometimes the 2-3 results on top highlighted in different color) are sponsored / paid results.

2) It is totally up to google how it "sorts" the results. They have an algorithm that decides which results are most relevant and should be on the top. And yes, good seo techniques make the content of your website appear more relevant for certain keywords and hence bring your site to the top of the non-paid results.

Look at the following topic and related stuff for more details:

Proper SEO certainly is key, and this does not mean keyword stuffing. Today's search engines use more of a human approach to deciding who's on top.

CONTENT IS KING!

Not only do you need a properly optimized website, but you need to really get a grasp on the 3 words listed above. Also long-tail keywords are far more valuable to you than just a keyword. Consider how many people search for a word like "computer" during the course of a day. Now how many do you think are looking for "Dell Laptop Travel Computer"? Probably still a lot, but not as many as the first single keyword.

But getting a good ranking in the search engine goes far beyond one's own website. Getting good backlinks from article and video directories is also a must. There are techniques to getting in the free spots of Google which anyone can learn.

Here's a website full of valuable information to help you with your Internet marketing dreams.
