Why is my internet speed slower than what I am paying for?
Long story, short:

I'm paying for 25 Mb/s, but on speedtest.net, I'm only getting 5 Mb/s.
I know it isn't fully accurate and that it's suppose to be 25 Mb/s max, but is it suppose to be this much of a difference? 5 Mb/s is suppose to be the speed package tier below the one I'm paying for.

I already contacted them and they guided me through some steps but that didn't fix it.

I also know it isn't the computer, because it's the same speed for both computers I have. I've reset the modem, cleared cache and stuff, but no success.

Any ideas on what I should do?
Additional Details: Both computers are fairly new. One was bought in 2008, and the other 2011, and both their speed use to be fine, but suddenly dropped down to 5 Mb/s max.

Since you already contacted the company and they are not offering what you are paying for either just cancel your internet provider subscription or better yet many high speed internet providers provide a money back guarantee if your internet speed isn't what they claim should be the max.

Change your ISP.

Internet speed is determined by a number of factors, you say you tried two different computers on the line and both showed the same speed - are both computers the same spec? Are they new computers or old computers? Did you try both wifi and a cable connection for them? wifi will always be slow.

Really the only people who can help you didnt - your own ISP. You need to phone them back and tell them to either explain why you are only picking up 5mb/s or to put you on a more appropriate package as there is no point paying for something they CANT DELIVER. OR YOU CANT GET.

99% of the time, its the home users issue, old connections to the telephone equipment, bad wiring etc. Have them check it all.

Read the Terms and Conditions of your contract with the ISP carefully.

Almost certainly the contract will state that your speed is "up to 25Mb/s" and the actual speed you achieve is dependent upon a large number of factors, the most significant of which is the distance of your house from the telephone exchange.

An actual speed of 5 Mb/s suggest that the line length is around 2-3 km.

If you want 25 Mb/s then try to rent an apartment in the upper floors of the telephone exchange.

Check with your neighbours to confirm the general speed in your area.

If they both suddenly dropped, call the company back. And try plugging your computer directly into the modem without the router, and running the test again.
