my internet connection is really bad - its on one moment and then turns off! I have a "Linksys" USB extension base (BTW)

Change your internet connection. I had the same problem. I ended up changing it. I faced same problem for almost 3 months.

I would contact your provider and explain that to them, there might be something they can do(check signal strength or provide you with updated equipment.) Typically a hardwired ethernet cable provides the fastest internet. maybe the USB method is becoming unstable.
