Who owns core root domains ?
I would like to have my own webpage. Let's say I would be able to have my own webserver, program and code my own webpage - why must I LEASE or RENT a domain and not be able to use my own ? For example I want to make it http://www.gtrfmb.ypd . Ypd is not registered anywhere and I am sure there are thousand of other combination I could come up with using 3 characters.

So my question is, who owns the rights to deny me to make my own domain under my own DOT XXX with my own website running on my own server with my own internet connection - or in essence, who gets to own the .coms or .ypds and get to lease/rent them out ?

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) owns every domain name and extension and the domain names are purchased after paying ICANN through registrars like GoDaddy, OVH etc.

You don't seem to understand how the web works! Its like if you have a server at home, and you have a website on it, and you want me and others to access it using the internet, you need valid "DNS" to propagate your webpage's location with the name of your domain.

The "DOT XXX" is called the domain's extension. Any unusual domain extension like .ypd etc is called a TLD "Top Level Domain" and is charged accordingly by ICANN. Also note that not all extensions can be had with a domain name, its really up to ICANN that which extension they might offer at a said time.

No one.. you cna have yousite.xxx you just cant have it on the public network(Eg. the internet)

Whoever pays the fees gets to do what they want with it......otherwise you wouldn't be able to get any websites because there would be someone out there parking them all and not paying a penny and then trying to sell them for millions.

Which is why they charge a fee... to prevent a wild wild web of everyone doing what they very well please.

Also, you don't have an Internet connection "of your own" unless you're paying a backbone provider handsomely for the bandwidth; your local ISP most likely frowns on customers running servers.
