You will need either a wireless router or a wireless network card for your desktop.

if you are using wireless router then you do not need to do anything.

if you are trying to share internet between your desktop and laptop using a wireless network card or usb card

then you need to enable packet forwarding on desktop and internet connection sharing

connect pc and laptop in adhoc mode, now they can share internet.
