Recent Graduate - How are chances of getting an Online Marketing job with 1 internship?
Am interested in online marketing like SEO, Social Media and so on. I don't have a lot of work experience and just started to get into the topic. Haven't done SEO but read a lot of about it such as social media marketing.

What are the chances for a graduate for getting such a job in North England and East England? (not London).

Anything I should be aware of?

I don't have a LinkedIn profile yet but also don't have a good picture of myself. Should I use a cartoon picture or chess picture or so?
Got 1 internship, 2 months, marketing & pr... any ideas for a good CV? how should I present myself at interviews?

As an online job, you would not need to relocate. There are a few specific PR businesses in London and globally of course massive scope. It depends on what your offering. A specific PR business is more of an agency who can be outsourced to by other businesses... For example Ocado might use a London PR business rather than having their own marketing and PR division. Of this then, 3 things: 1. Work in specific PR? 2. Work in Online Marketing Department for a corporation? 3. Make your own business offering marketing on a more of a freelance basis with creation of materials and other marketing/pr activities?

North England... Fantastic doldrums... But it's all about London and Saint Tropez. All this North England stuff is a farce right from the very start.

Going to work agencies helps, going to monster.co.uk, a work program to fine tune a CV... It's luck of the drawn. I go to interview in whatever is appropriate, sometimes smart casual, sometimes more street if it's one of those Silicon Valley types.

Don't use a picture for Linkedin if you don't have a proper one. I leave mine blank and no one has ever said anything about it. It really isn't that hard to take a good picture anyway. Wear a white shirt, do up your hair, shave, and take a photo of your face + shoulder. Done.

You need to build your portfolio if you want to land yourself with a decent job. That can be done in many many ways:

1. Post in your local classifieds that you would do any online marketing work for free.
2. Bid for jobs on Elance, Freelancer, Odesk etc.
3. Door knocking - ask small business owners if they would like to subscribe to your services for free until they see results.

Marketing trend is definitely moving from traditional to online, but it is still going through transition phase at the moment. A lot of companies are just starting to hire their own in-house digital marketing person instead of paying agent to do it. This means that they are new to the whole online marketing concept. I know because I have been observing the job market over the last 2 months.

If you want to land yourself a job straightaway try the following:

1. Apply for another internship and prove yourself worthy to them. Try working free for a month or 2 and see if they would let you stay.
2. Look for low paying or part time jobs. They are normally small businesses who see the potential of hiring an online marketing person but are hesitant of taking a big step due to budget constraints. They are good stepping stones.

Above that I have a few more advice for you:

1. Try not to start an SEO business. I own one at the moment and it's stressful because of 2 reasons:
a)
Too much uncertainties. Google algorithm will keep changing and you can never be sure if the small amount of money your clients are paying you will be enough for you to do a 100% whitehat job that takes time to do. I have had 100% success rate for SEO so far, but I still don't sleep well until I see results.
b)
International competition. ALL my clients with websites have received PLENTY of emails from India, Philippines, Europe and Australia SEO or Web companies. You are competing worldwide. You better be big or cheap if you want to survive.

2. The most promising career paths (easiest and most feasible) so far:
a) Work for a company as a digital marketing coordinator. Don't work for an agency, work for a company.
b) Start your own online business - retail, services, etc etc. E.g. sell a niche product and apply your online marketing methods to it.

Good luck!

North of England is totally depressed and you are totally clueless about SEO so you have NO CHANCE of any online marketing job. Never use a cartoon picture of yourself on Linkedin as it will make you look totally childish and immature and nobody will every offer you a job.

Just put up a bad picture of yours, nobody cares what you look like.
