Use a keyword search tool like http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/‎.

Enter in words that relate to your blog and the tracker will provide related key words and phrases, along with their stats (how high they rank in search engine searches). Choose the words and / or phrases with the highest ranking.

Perform this search every few weeks so you can update your keywords accordingly. You don't need a lot of keywords. Up to ten will do, so long as they're good ones. The search engines don't like overloaded keywords. And only choose words that truly relate to your blog posts.

http://my-free-im.com has a lot of good info on SEO, Traffic, Blogging, etc. You may want to check it out if you have the time (it's a big site, a lot of info to run through).

Good Luck!

Keyword research is an essential part of SEO process. You have to be very careful & attentive while going through this process.

First you need to identify your landing pages(your home page) with internal pages & categories. Once done with landing pages identify specific topics of your website. Thus you will come with short list of keywords for each page. You should think on behalf your customer that how he will identify your product/service.

Check keyword popularity & competition with Google keyword tool. You will get new keywords from the tool itself. Consider all of them & finally make a final list of all keywords according to its search volume & competition.

The purpose of keyword research is to rank for a keyword that'll deliver traffic. The keyword should have the following attributes. Relevant to the blog post topic, suitable amount of traffic, somewhat easy to rank for on search engines.

You do keyword research to find keywords that have the attributes above.

Take note that you'll need to practice as much as possible in order to develop the skill of selecting the best possible keywords for your pages.

Step one: Brainstorm.
Based on the topic of your blog post, brainstorm a list of keywords you think people would search if they needed the information your writing about within the post. You'll use the words on the brainstorm list as seed keywords.

Step two: Use the seed keywords in a keyword tool.
The tool I'd start with would be the Google keyword planner. Just do a search for google keyword planner and you'll find it. Note: once you've become comfortable with the keyword planner, expand into more tools.

The seed keywords will help you discover more keyword ideas. The keyword planner will reveal how much traffic those keywords generate per month. Pick keyword ideas that may deliver suitable amount of traffic to that post, and is highly relevant to your blog post. Create a new list of keyword ideas with good traffic.

Step Three: Do keyword competition analysis.
This is useful to help you avoid keywords that are too difficult to rank for. To make this step easy I'd use the Moz keyword difficulty tool, simply google that to find it. I think it's free for 30 days and then a fee. Otherwise use other tools or do research to figure out how to do this manually.
