How do I switch my computer between networks?

I am ignorant when it comes to technology.

I am connected to a 'public network' symbolized by a park bench. Previously, I have been connected to a home network symbolized by a little house. When I go to my internet connection, I see no obvious way to switch. This happened after I sent my computer to my 'computer guy' for work.

After you're done rolling your eyes and/or laughing at my ignorance, I hope you'll tell me how I might switch back. Or what the difference is. Ideally, both - though the first seems more important.

Just tap on the house icon and you should be offered to connect / disconnect.
If that doesn't work, tap on the internet icon in your tool bar and at the bottom of the menu tap on "Open Network & Sharing". On this page you will find the "Trouble Shooting" selection etc.
Follow the directions presented. Also on that page are other options. Too much to explain but this is where to start.
