I've been thinking of learning about these things but I have a very busy routine and am not able to set aside hours upon hours of time for this. I'll be starting with SEM etc and want to know if I have to also learn about these to get the complete idea of SEO and SEM?

Just browse the videos in YouTube about SEM and SEO. There are many instructional videos made by those people in authority.

Since you're starting with SEM, it is very likely that you are going to be learning about things like PPC etc very soon. You don't have to be worried though as basic SEO and SEM don't require in-depth know how of these and their working but if you want to learn about good sound SEO and SEM techniques and are learning all this especially to avoid fraudulent people and optimization and marketing tactics then a basic knowledge of this is a must. They are not that hard or bad to learn about when you get you basic skills refined. You'll in fact find them quite interesting. Plus if what you're after is a complete idea of SEO and SEM as you stated, then there is no way you can avoid these other techniques.
