Restart computer if its in safemode, then it should be back. It if isn't change the theme. Go into your control panel and then Appearance & Personalization. Change theme to Windows 7 Aero or basic.

Your machine may have had a problem when you left it switched on and re-booted.

If you say it looks like Safe Mode ( poor graphics ) then you may well be in Safe Mode.
[ You cannot turn this off ]
Safe mode has "Safe Mode" written in all 4 corners.

Failing this it could be that your resolution is low.
see below to check
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windo...resolution

You could also try System Restore
Start > type in ....system restore ....ENTER
Select a date just prior to the start of your problem
Files / data / photos etc will be OK.
Updates and installed software since the selected date will need to be re-installed.

Go to control panel and choose ''reset your computer to an earlier time''.
Take it back about one week, and when you restart the problem is gone.
This has a 99% success rate and is very easy to do.
