If you are not up for an upgrade, you will have to pay full price for the phone, which is a couple hundred dollars. Another thing you could do was pay the early termination fee on your current plan. If you have any smartphone right now, the price to cancel your current contract is 325$ minus 10 dollars for every month you have completed. If your current phone isnt a smartphone, then its 150 dollars minus 4 bucks for every month you hit)ave completed. Then, you would open a new line and the iPhone 3GS would be free. If you don't have an upgrade, you will have to pay full price for the phone. I would open a new line and get the iPhone for free, and let your current phone plan stay until your able to cancel it (2 years after you buy). Just cancel your texting plan, lower your phone plan and internet and you can pay 10-20 bucks a month until your contract runs out. That way you'll get the iPhone for free.
