Does an internet modem/router have to be connected to a desktop?
or can it just be plugged into the wall?

No, it doesn't need to be connected to a desktop. You will have to plug your laptop into the router when you first set it up to configure the wireless but after that you can disconnect it.

It just needs to be plugged into the wall (AC) and the incoming internet connection from your ISP.

No it doesn't. You can just plug it into a wall. If you want to change the setting, just type in 196.168.0.1. Hard wire is always faster, so if there is anything next to the router use the Ethernet cable
