I'm being sued, but I think it's a scam.?
I live in Germany, but I'm actually Dutch. We (parents and brother) moved to Germany and now, almost a year later we're being sued by a singer from Denmark for unauthorized misuse of copyright or something (It's in German) and we got this official paper with the total sum and lawyers fee's. But, the name is wrong on the mail. They're suing my father, Franciscus Janssen but on the mail it says Frank Janssen, that's what he goes by, but it's not his legal name. Also, at the time the only person with internet connection was my father who had a usb stick for internet.

Is this a scam? I've read things online about people who get these things as spam, or that it's just a tactic to scare people into paying.

Did you misuse a Danish singer's music or lyrics? If so, then you need to pay for the rights. If you used a song or sampled a song on a video, blog, song, etc then you have to pay usage rights to the person whose song you used
If you or nobody in your house used this Danish singer's music then they can't sue you unless they have proof that you used their copyrighted material

Assume it's a scam unless you are presented with a summons and complaint from an actual court.

Even if it weren't a scam, you certainly wouldn't just dash off and pay a total stranger without a thorough investigation of what you're getting for you money (i.e., a license, waiver, release, whatever).

If they list a lawyer's office, feel free to telephone that office and ask to speak to the lawyer about the case...
