Wireless laptop says i have internet connection but dosent connect?

I have windows 8.1 and my laptop says I can connect to the WiFi but it says ethernet 2 is unplugged? My phone and Xbox can connect to the internet so why can't my laptop?

Move the mouse pointer to the bottom right corner of the screen.
Go to settings click the Networks button.( the one on top of the notifications button )
Make sure the "Airplane mode" is set to Off and the "WiFi" is set to on

the above is for basic troubleshooting for the WiFi connection

For further troubleshooting,
locate the little icon on the task bar, which shows your wifi signal strength (the one looks like stairs)
then right click on it and select "troubleshoot problems"
If it find anything wrong, it will show it to you.

Lot of people with 8.1 having this problem, microsoft has no fix for it yet, but other have worked out a fix by using Google dns. read about it on this link below
