Build backlinks. It is as simple as that - backlinks with your keyword as the anchor text. Don't forget to do onsite SEO as well. You can find a list of best SEO tips here: http://www.webmastertalkforums.com/searc...-tips.html

What you say is partially correct - Things do change in the SEO world quite quickly... HOWEVER other things do not:

- Google wants to see a natural progression of backlinks - AVOID things like sitewide links and spammy blog comments.

- There will be a massive amount of people all calling themselves 'experts', and mostly giving you conflicting advise! - One thing that will help you in this is an ability to think about things for yourself.

- If you want a good book, try the 'seo book' by Aaron Wall...

- Also, join forums like: forums.digitalpoint.com... Read around, get active int eh community - but beware of buying services there! - Lots of 'Pseudo' experts there, offering services both good and bad.

-It is also advisable to read Matt Cutts blog (He is the head of Google's anti-spam team) - http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/ - Reading here might help you to avoid scammers and spammers.
-

As a general guide, be VERY careful with these kind of backlinks, as they are often spammy:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Blog Comments (can be done ethically and correctly, but avoid mass-comment services or outsourcing!)

* Profile backlinks & forum spam

* Mass- submission tools in general

As a general guide, these techniques can be good - IF done correctly:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Join twitter, facebook and linkedin... Make friends with people in your niche, and tweet interesting stories related to your niche (NOT just your own stories!)

* Write press releases, quality ones, about news relating to your compnay, or your subject matter - there are loads of free press release sites out there - http://www.free-prsite.com is one, and that one even allows you to put links in your press release for free! - it is also Google news approved, but be sure to submit a good quality press release. Do a Google search on: how to write a press release.

* Write interesting, unique articles, and submit them to ezinearticles.com, goarticles.com and article dashboard

* Make pages on sites like Squidoo.com - again, use unique, interesting content.

* Try to talk with bloggers in your niche, tell them about news in your niche, or about your site, in case they find anything interesting they want to write about.

FINALLY, AND PERHAPS MOST IMPORTANTLY...

Do your research - especially keyword research! Basing all the above WORK on poorly selected keyterms can be a disaster!!!

So, to that end...

Visit: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

1) Put in keywords relating to your niche.
2) Make sure you have the country and language selected properly...
3) enter the captcha letters/code.
4) IMPORTANT - in the left hand sidebar, untick board, and TICK EXACT MATCH (and only exact match).
5) if you are targeting a specific country, use the 'local' results column... click the column heading to sort on that field...

6) Try to look for keywords of 1000 searches per month minimum (unless you are going for lots of long tail keywords, rather than just a few stronger ones).

7) Remember though, the more searches per month, often the higher competition and thus harder it is to rank for the keyterm... SO...

8) When you have a few keyterms with between 1000 and 10000 exact match searches, visit google.com (or google.co.uk - or your countries version!) and one at a time, search each keyword and see how much competition there is (how many results are in Google for a search on the term). Write it down next to each keyterm. AS YOU DO THIS FOR EACH KEYTERM...

9) As you do the above for each keyterm - check what other sites are on page 1 of google. In general if it is very big sites (wikipedia, bbc, .gov sites or even really big brands) then it may be a tough to rank for keyword... IF there are 1 or 2 ezinearticles etc on the 1st page of results, it may be easier to rank for...

10) Select the keywords over 1000 exact match monthly local searches (presuming you are going after traffic from your country - which is usually a good idea, especially at first) and with as little competition as possible.
