does activesync need a internet connection?

i just got a new phone and i look at task manager and activesync is always running, can i turn off activesync???? and im worried if it does require a internet connection i may go over my data amount

Activesync does not require internet.
If your phone is set up to download email, stocks, news, or any other type of downloadable media when connected through Activesync it (by default) will use the host computer's internet connection instead of the phone's cellular internet connection.

Turning off activesync will disable your computer's ability to synchronize contacts, calendar, email, etc. with your phone.
