Help me with this mystery symbol?
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=...=1&theater

The only clue I have is that it might be Viking.
Thanks so much!
Context: My family is from iceland, my mom and grandmother are citizens of iceland. I found the symbol on a necklace in a box of jewelry that she gave me a few years ago. It probably has to do with Icelandic folklore.

And to Elizabeth:
Originality Points: 0
Success Points: 0
Additional Troll Points: 0
Total Troll Level: 0

Keep trying, young troll. Someday yet you may pull it off, but that didn't get me for a second.
xD

It would help if you could mention the context in which you found it.

It *could* be an Icelandic "galdrastafur" - which might make people erroneously believe it is "Viking" - but I cannot find it among the 100-150 most known ones.

It could be a modern magic sigil. Those are personal, so if it isn't mentioned somewhere how it was made, you will never find out.

You're right, that is a Viking symbol, though not a Viking rune. It was only ever used by the Viking royalty of Norway (circa 900AD). It was first used by one of the son's of King Olav The Black. At that time, it was only part of (I guess you'd call it a ) 'psuedo-magic talisman. To archaeoligists & people who study the vikings, it is little more than a symbol of unknown meaning. However, if you know the history of it, you will see that what it really is is it's a map. .... ( It does have another meaning as well, byt I cannot hope to try to explain that so I'll keep that to myself for now. ) ................ Source:: Study of Vikings, & also, my own family history.

I've seen that symbol before and it's totally viking. It's the symbol of the Sun Bear. There's even a small legend that goes with it, but I don't remember it, if I do I'll be sure to edit later.
Sorry I'm not much help.

After a thorough investigation I can confirm that the sole depiction of that symbol on the internet is on your facebook page.

However, it reminds me of http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co...reprun.svg

Just flip it, and you can see it. The image is a form of runic magic inscribed on a stick in the 16th century. In this particular case the stick would kill the cattle of the person who had the stick in his house. If we assume the symbol on the right is the murder part, it is possible what you have is an amulet supposed to ward off murderers.

PS: It's not from the Viking Age. Stainless steel did not exist in Scandinavia at the time (and then certainly not on Iceland), and the oxidation rate of most other metals means the amulet, unless it is more than two centimeters thick, should have rusted away a long time ago. Unless it's gold, which would be an extremely rare find in what was at the time a quiet Norwegian farming colony primarily relying on silver from Norway and Francia.
