they certainly have conflict of interest as in SEO interferes in GOOG's quality of results searched ! but SEO is not against Goog !

No if done the right way in Google's eyes. SEO makes it easier for search engines to locate information. However, abuse of SEO, like keyword stuffing or search engine spamming, can lead search engines to otherwise useless content.

A rapid build up of backlinks also alert search engines of the possibility that one is tricking the system. Otherwise, a natural-looking build up should be useful as it helps search engines identify sites that deserve to be given importance.
