Is there a way to purge viruses from chrome?

I think i may have caught a virus on Google chrome. Randomly when i go on a new page, ads will pop up in a new tab or take me to a new site, recommended searches pops up to the right and some text will turn blue linking me to blink box.
Is there a way to get rid of these viruses just on this software? Preferably keeping my preferences (bookmarks etc)
+are these even viruses or spyware or something else?

On the top right, click the three lines that look like a paragraph.
Click settings.
Scroll tot he bottom and click Show advanced settings
Scroll to the bottom and click the button that says restore browser defaults.
