Is it worth selling on ebay?
Can anyone explain ebay to me? what im wanting to know is how much do ebay take off your selling price? if I sold something for £20 would I get most of that? just wondering if its worth it because I have loads of stuff I could be selling on there but im a bit put off by all the charges!

When your item sells or ends with a winning bid your seller account is charged a final value fee based on the item's total cost to the buyer, including postage, packaging and any other related costs. So the price that is taken of changes every time. It is defiantly worth selling on eBay as not that much comes off and you usually get most of the money.

There are 3 separate ebay/paypal fee's.
[a] Listing fee {advert cost} this is usually very small, 40 or 50 pence unless you are selling a car in which case it is 10 quid.
[b] Final Value Fee {Auctioneers commission} this is 10% of the total selling cost INCLUDING the cost of post & packing. [The amount is capped when selling cars but also has a 20 quid minimum then].
[c] Paypal administration Fee because almost everyone pays by paypal, this is 3 3/4% of the selling price. {Bank charges}
In total you lose approximately 15% in fee's on each sale. If you sold an item for £20 you would get about £17 of that.

ebay is an auction site just like the bricks and mortar ones dotted around all over the country and their total fee's are pretty much the same as the bricks & mortar ones.

one thing that has not been addressed by the other answers is fraudulent buyers.

eg: you sell an item that you properly described, photoed, packed and shipped. the buyer either says the package was lost, damaged, or the item was not as described -- and they want ALL their money back.

A friend had that happen recently with a DVD which was properly described, photos, shipped, everything. The buyer was in another country and said the DVD was not as described- then they threatened with complaints- the friend gave them their money back completely along with the DVD, and had to pay ebay insertion charges.

btw.. the DVD sold for 99 cents, shipping was over $5-

Read ebay's help pages for new sellers, which gives full details of all costs and charges.

Use the eBay calculator to calculate the fees that eBay and PayPal charges: http://finalfeecalculator.com
