internet suddenly slow?

Alright, so I've been having this issue with my internet, primarily in games as that's where is matters the most. For the last two months it has been fine so i doubt its the ISP but over the last two weeks or so i have been experiencing terrible pings and massive lag spikes. In the games that i can monitor it, it will be around 80 then jump up to like 750 - 999 for a few seconds then jump back down. I cant do anything with the router because it is in my roommates room. My main worry is that my computer is infected and there is something else i don't know about sucking up my bandwidth. does anyone know of any way to check for and/or get rid of my issue?
