Does the MyTouch3g Slide need a data plan for internet?

I got the phone today and I do not have a data plan, but I can connect to WiFi. I would like to get apps off the Android market, go on Facebook, etc. but it's telling me I can't. Do I need to have a data plan to use those kinds of things?
