A router itself doesn't give you internet. You need to sign up for internet service first. Then you use the wireless router to set up your own WIFI network.
Edit: As easy as it gets. You NEED to get some internet service. You HAVE to pay for it. It is NOT free. Buying a router does NOT get you internet service. Who ever told you that is full of crap.

A router will not give you the internet automatically. It has to pick up a signal. If you have a laptop with wifi, you can check if you can get free internet at your house by checking the wifi connections.

You will have to get your parents to sign up for internet service, most companies will then supply a router as part of the deal, just buying a router and connecting it at home will not work because it is not connected to an active internet supply.
