why would he need anti-virus if he doesn't have the internet. This would just be a waste of system resources having this on his computer. But all anti-viruses require internet connections so the virus databases can be constantly updated

The very nature of anti-virus programs mean they need continual updates. If he doesn't have an internet connection, he'll need to download them on a computer that does, save them somewhere (flash drive, disc, whatever), and install them on his machine. Since there are constantly new viruses emerging, any anti-virus software will need updated definitions to catch them. Though if he's not connected to the internet at all, his likelihood of getting a virus is quite low, unless he's sharing files with people in another way.

every anti-virus can be installed without internet...

internet is only needed to update the anti-virus database so that new viruses can be scanned...

If you have no internet connection then getting virus protection will be pointless. Because viruses, trojans, rootkits, etc all come off the internet. Yea there are some instances where if you have a flash drive with some internet files from another computer then that could infect your computer but if that computer has good protection then that shouldn't be a problem and in this case windows defender should take care of that <a program that windows comes with>
Now if you were to get internet then simply downloading a free version of some antivirus program won't give you much protection. You need to go to the store and buy a godo anti virus program such as norton or webroot. But make sure that you only have one antivirus program on your computer at a time or your computer will crash.
I hope this helps
