would a 5yr or older router slow internet speed?
we have a old Belkin g router and we have had it for about 5 or more years and recently our internet has been getting disconnected or really slow. but the computers hard wired into the modem with a Ethernet dose not lose it only from time to time unlike the wireless devices. so would replacing the router speed up the internet at all? I don't want to go buy one and it do nothing lol
we get 10 megs with the internet we have I did not know if that would have anything to do with it
the thing about that is there isn't much linked wireless to our internet to so I dont see how that would be affect the speed and connection. our internet worked fine. we dident get disconnected or loss of speed. then all of a sudden it started and nothing new has been added to the router wirelessly

If your 5 year old router is dropping wireless signals, then you should probably go in for a new router.

As far as speed is concerned , get a wireless N router.

If your internet speed is very fast like upwards of 10 megabytes and those crazy speeds only then should you ever be bothered by router's maximum speed.

Don't forget that in those intervening 5 years there likely have been many more devices added to your iSP's own Network, and that puts extra load on the servers.
You should test your entire Network before jumping to any conclusions.

Test all your relevant network stats, but pay particular attention to "network buffer measurements" to see what it is:
ICSI Netalyzr: http://netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/
Requires JavaScript. NoScript users can 'temporarily allow berkley...'
This takes several minutes to run.

The results will give the entire Network, which includes your ISP, so although your router may be just fine, it could be the ISP config's that are mis-adjusted or could be tweaked. Many's the time a person complains to the ISP, and they flatly deny any responsibility, without actually examining their configs.
Also gives some solutions, based on your results.

There may even be some other tweaks you can make:
https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm examines your iSP's default servers and graphically displays alternate server performance. You can modify your default servers to take advantage of those...as explained on the GRC pages.
