How do you get a shy guy's number you don't really talk to?

So, there is this very attractive guy that I have had a crush on for a while now, but he is shy and just a quiet guy. He doesn't talk much even in his group of friends. I want to start talking to him more and getting to know him but I no longer have class with him and am to shy and awkward to approach him just in the hallway or anything. Usually I would turn to Facebook in this situation but he doesn't ever use his (to the point that he basically doesn't have one) so he hasn't seen or responded to my messages... A friend told me I should message him saying I noticed he is never on so he should text me instead and give him my number that way but with him never on I don't think he will see it and if/when he does I feel like it will be awkward. Does anyone have any ideas on what else I could do? Or should I just kind of drop it/give up? /:

no dont give up if i were u i would approach him. or begin by saying hi, more often smiling ect. so that it wouldnt be that awkward. i did all those things with my now boyfriend for a year

I put my phone number on a piece of paper in my crush's side pocket on his backpack last year. It wasn't weird, we started texting and ended up just being friends because of religious differences, but it's still a good way to get him your number if you're both too shy to talk much yet Good luck!
