Facebook at first to many is just a way to get connected with old friends and current friends in someone's environment. Over time, people post pictures, videos, and messages of their day to day life, only to see that their other friend's posts are getting many more "Likes" than theirs, in which they are lucky to get at least 1 or 2 in the first place. It's that indirect urge to be noticed by other people (who you realistically don't care about enough in the real world for their opinions) that drives many people to be addicted to facebook. It's the human nature of wanting to feel more or just as special as your popular friends. Trust me, you're better off without having a facebook. When I had facebook, I started caring about people's opinions who weren't even my close friends. If you do however need one for the sake of getting back together with old friends, connecting with school clubs, college, or work, adjust your privacy settings so no one can look your account up. Hope this answered your question.

Obviously it is a social network and those who use it want to be seen and make friends or further their business. I have never been one to join it.
