Internet Reapetidly Timing Out?

So for the last few months I've been having problems with my internet (Verizon) where it would time out every five minutes or so for about 40 seconds. Normally this wouldn't be too bothersome but it interferes when I'm in a competitive gaming match. Is there anything I can do to prevent this or stop this problem?

Best thing to do is to call verizon and ask them to check your lines for faults . It is possible that you have faulty modem or rauter AC adapter .It gives power and all lights are on but it drops power for a notch causing modem to drop the connection and it takes about 30 sec to reset itself . If you have adapter with same specifications from some other device try replacing the one on modem .
