Brother hogs internet?
Recently my brother has taken an affinity to uploading videos to Youtube involving the popular indie game, Minecraft. I wouldn't have cared less until i noticed a huge drop in connection performance and at times i can't even connect at all while he's using the entire internet to upload his videos with at least 1mb/s.
This has become an increasing issue because i like to spend time on the internet to playing other games with my friends such as Borderlands 2. Sadly i can't do this now because of his long upload times.

I have tried reasoning with him on several accounts from having him upload them late at night or to try different methods that i KNOW work but he refuses all of them. I literally have no way to verbally convince him to upload at some other time.

So what I'm getting at is, is there some way i can change who is allowed on our internet and/or how much of it they can use? We both are on Mac's which our school gave us which was quite kind but also hinders what we can do on it. If there is some sort of program that i could download or change some preferences around to change how much he can use, I'd be happy to hear it and try it out because now it is very annoying to be booted off whenever i try to listen to music or game with my friends.

I hope someone can help me with this, thanks!

Step 1: log into your router settings page if you don't know how then google it, next poke around a bit and find the section labeled. MAC filtering. Then select ban MAC addresses or something like that, then log on to his laptop, click the apple in the upper left, click About This Mac then, when the new window opens click "more info" and then if you select "network info" or "network" you should see the hardware/MAC address, now go back to the router settings page you found and add that MAC address to the banlist/blacklist. That will ban him from the network entirely. When you want to allow him back on just disable the blacklist.

If you have any questions call you router company or email me at jackkephart@me.com

You can use a managed switch or router to implement quality of service features, which means you can control what his bandwidth limit or priority is. If your existing router does this then just log in and make the settings.

If it does not then replace the router with one that can. One good option is to get a router that supports DD-WRT firmware because that allows making the needed settings while many inexpensive consumer grade routers don't allow it.

You could also sneak onto his computer and make operating system changes but that is an invasion of privacy and could get you into more trouble.

Instead of getting into a tech war maybe you could take it up with your network provider, i.e. your parents who I presume are paying the bills. If they are reasonable and actually understand this stuff, of course.
