Suddenly my screen is full of adverts and requests to download different things, how do I stop it?

Delete all your cookies. You'll find you have to type in usernames and passwords more often until the useful ones regenerate.

If you're using Firefox, you can install AdBlockerPlus which stops most on-screen advertising. You need to tweak it a bit and allow stuff from yimg or your Y!A buttons won't appear.
