To preface, this is an issue of security/privacy and computer tech. that would be better suited for the Computers & Internet: Security category than in Mythology & Folklore. However, I'll still answer your question here since it's a matter of importance.

Anyways, my first question would be whether you shared any clues about your identity with this stranger on Omegle? Let's say for example that you shared your first name, the town/city in which you live, and a few other clues. Using some creative Google search queries and a few other resources, it might be possible for a nosey person to put those clues together to figure out who you are. Once they've figured out your name, they can go to one of the online telephone directories to get your phone number.

Also consider this statement from Omegle's privacy policy: "Omegle video chat requires a direct connection to be made between your computer and the other user's computer. To do this, it is necessary to make your IP address available to the other user's computer, although it is not shown to the other user by Omegle's interface. This is a necessary part of how any P2P video chat system functions. If you are not comfortable with this, use text mode (or spy mode) instead." (http://www.omegle.com/static/privacy.html )

Even though your IP address on video chat isn't directly viewable by the other computer user, if he or she is technically sophisticated, that person can grab it. Although an IP address doesn't directly identify you, it can tell somewhere where you live (within a general area) and your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Here's an example: http://www.whatismyip.com/

One thing you could try is using your IP number as a Google search term. It's possible that somehow your personal information has become publicly associated with that number. It's even possible that a screwup at your ISP caused too much personal info. about you to become available. It happened recently in Norway. One ISP there accidentally displayed subscriber identities alongside IP numbers!

Again, a technically savvy person can use your IP information combined with various clues you shared in your chat to track down your identity. If you were doing a video chat, it's possible that the other person figured out who you are by taking your location info. (via the IP address) along with your first name (if you shared it with him) - and searching Facebook profiles in that location until he found a familiar face in the search results. Then he would have your full name, and a trip to an online telephone directory would reveal your phone number.

My recommendation is to: (1) Be careful what you share about yourself online, and (2) Follow the advice in the Omegle Privacy Policy, "If you are not comfortable with [sharing your IP address], use text mode (or spy mode) instead" of video chat. (3) Be careful what information about yourself you make publicly available about yourself via Facebook and other social-sharing sites. For example, you may want to think twice about making photos of yourself available for all the world to see. (4) You might also wish to get another phone number. Also delist your phone number from online telephone directories so that stalkers and nosey folks can't grab it. For some advice on how to do that, see:

Yeah, what you experienced would be pretty frightening and creepy, so hopefully this advice has helped. Stay safe online!
