why do people develop free games on facebook.....?

I was curious why there are all these free applications on facebook and how exactly they were profitable. i know some of them are just people developing something for fun, but others are also trying to advance themselves careerwise through it

most of the games you will notice, there is a section to buy points this can be done via offers, this in turn makes money for facebook and the designer of the game,
