should I hire a SEO or market my website myself?

I am starting a new website and would like to know if I should hire a marketer to drive traffic to my website or should I do it myself. I know I can do google adwords myself but was just wondering if an SEO marketer would have other ways to get a large amount of traffic to my website

Market your website yourself. It will make you a better marketer.

Hiring others to do the SEO for you can be a hassle and a waste of money. If you're not an expert, AdWords is like courting disaster.

Study on-page SEO so you can make the necessary adjustments to your site if any. Then do a lot of article marketing to build up one-way links to your site from high PR article directories like EzineArticles.

If you have money to spend, better spend it on outsourcing your article marketing.

Spending money on someone else to do your SEO might speed things up and also free your time - it depends how quickly you want results.
If you're comfortable with Adwords and you have some good keywords to concentrate on, then you should be able to do a lot yourself.
Article marketing is a very well-proven method to help sales and increase your backlinks, as is forum marketing, where you participate in discussions on sites that are relevant to your own.

You can compare the 2 situations. What is more valuable your time or money? You can become an expert at some point but it may take too long. Imagine you want to win a case in court without an attorney. Every filed is complex enough and takes months if not years to master. What about the business you may be losing for all that time. There is a misconception that using meta tags will bring you on page #1. There is a lot to SEO, not just metas. SEO campaigns can hurt your business when linking from bad sites, directories, etc.

Try to find a company that has skin in the game, pay for performance.
